An assistant sub-inspector, deputed on special duty for deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal's visit, allegedly consumed some poisonous substance on Friday morning.

He was rushed to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where his condition is stated to be critical.

In view of Badal's visit to city, ASI Joginder Singh, who is posted at Jagatpuri that comes under Division Number 4 police station, was stationed at Jalandhar Bypass Chowk on Friday.

Around 9.30am, Singh consumed some poisonous substance and collapsed on the ground, leading to panic among colleagues, who rushed him to the hospital.

While senior police officials were busy in special duty, the ASI's colleagues said he was going through severe stress due to work load during the past few days. They said Singh was also not allowed to go on a leave for which he had applied some days ago.

A colleague of the ASI, said he had requested senior officials that he may not be posted on special duty on Friday as he was not in a position to take stress. However, the request was denied that apparently lead him to consume poison.
