ASI, two others booked for murder on HC direction in 2012 case

Over two-and-a-half years after the incident, on directions of the Punjab and Haryana high court, an assistant sub inspector (ASI) and two others have been booked for allegedly murdering a man and cremating his body without identifying it.

Based on the high court orders, the police have booked ASI Roop Singh, posted at Thermal police station, Bhim Chand, a resident of National colony here and Raju, a property dealer, a resident of Balla Ram Nagar here, under sections 302, 34 and 201 of IPC.

The incident dates back to May-June 2012, when Lakhwinder Singh alias Lucky, a resident of Kothe, Amarpura in Bathinda, had gone missing. The family of the missing person had lodged a complaint in this connection at Thermal police station.

Gurdip Singh, father of the victim, had alleged that his son was called by Raju on May 25, but he didn't return home after that. Meanwhile, the police recovered an unidentified body from Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant here. The police kept the body in the crematorium for three days after which they cremated it.

The family had approached the high court alleging that the body found from the lake was cremated without asking the family for identifying it to ascertain if it was the body of their missing son or not.

SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that, as per directions of teh high court, a special investigation team comprising SP, city, Narinder Pal Singh, DSP City II, Palwinder Singh Cheema, SHO, thermal police station, Jeet Singh, has been constituted to further inquire into this matter.
