Nearly 2,500 fishermen caught a record 1400-metric-tonne (MT) fish worth nearly `8 crore from the Gobindsagar reservoir in the 2013-14 fiscal, an official said on Monday.

“The fishermen belong to 30 co-operative societies and will benefit with the record fish production,” said principal secretary (fisheries) Tarun Shridhar.

“This year, production was of importance as it had hit rock bottom in 2011-12 and fallen to 620 tonnes,” he said.

Shridhar said hydro-biological studies undertaken by state research agencies and Central Inland Fisheries institute, Barrackpore, on the carrying capacity had revealed that the optimal fish production of Gobindsagar was around 150kg per hectare.

“Among the large reservoirs of the country, Gobindsagar reservoir has consistently maintained the highest per-hectare production level in the country for the past 30 years,” he said.

“This year, fish production was 131 kilogram per hectare. This is almost 12 times more than the national average of 11.4 kilogram per hectare,” he said. He added that strict conservation and patrolling was carried out throughout the year in general and off-season period. Quality gill nets of fine twine were provided to select fishermen. “Fishermen were also trained regularly,” he said.
