Two unidentified men made an unsuccessful attempt to break open a State Bank of Patiala ATM on the Patiala-Sirhind Road in the wee hours of Saturday, killing the 32-yearold guard before fleeing the spot.

Police said the accused, whose pictures were captured on the CCTV camera and have been made public, seemed unaware that the guard room in the ATM was occupied. The deceased guard has been identified as Gurpreet Singh (32), a resident of Green Park Colony here.

“The two accused had done a recce of the place, but seemed unaware of the guard room behind. Ten minutes after their first visit, they returned armed with iron rods, smashed the CCTV cameras and tried to break open the ATM, which had Rs 35 lakh,” said a police source. Alerted by the noise, the guard confronted the two men. He was attacked with an iron rod and other sharp-edged weapons, killing him on the spot. The police were alerted by an ATM user who went to the machine to withdraw cash around 5am and found the guard’s body lying in a pool of blood. SSP Gurmeet Singh Chauhan said the accused had been captured on the CCTV. A forensic team had taken fingerprints and other samples from the spot. “From the footage, the accused seem to be novices. Their photographs have been released,” the SSP added.

The accused have been booked under Sections 302 (murder) and 460 (trespassing during night hours) of the IPC.
