Three unidentified men made an unsuccessful attempt to loot an automated teller machine (ATM) in Industrial Area Phase 8-B late Saturday night.
A security guard deployed at the ATM foiled the attempt and was injured by the robbers.
He was admitted to the civil hospital, Phase 6. The guard, Veer Singh from Uttarakhand, was deployed at the ATM about six months back. Veer Singh said, “Three men with their faces covered entered the booth at about 12.15am and attacked me from behind.” They tried to break open the machine but did not succeed.
“I kept resisting them. One of them took out a sharp edged weapon and attacked me on my head and arm.”
The fled from the spot on a motorcycle, with the guard bleeding profusely. The entire incident lasted for about 20 minutes. The guard informed the police who took him to hospital.
A case has been registered under section 324 ( causing hurt by dangerous weapons) and trespass of the Indian Penal Code in this connection. The police said they will scan the CCTV footage to identify the accused.
