Six burglars took away a Bank of Baroda ATM from near the local grain market in the early hours of Thursday. It contained Rs 14 lakh cash.
They broke the security camera inside the unmanned kiosk but failed to spot the one outside, which captured their movements clearly, branch manager SK Shabab has said. “The gang came around 3am. The camera captures them putting the machine in their car and securing it with a chain after failing to break open its chest,” he added. The kiosk is guarded only till 10pm.
Patti deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Davinder Singh Sandhu and station house officer (SHO) concerned Rajwinder Kaur inspected the scene of crime.
Sandhu said police had strong clues about the burglars, besides their fingerprints. Experts and sniffer dogs had examined the spot and traps laid at all roundabouts and roads of Patti and its nearby areas, he said, expecting the hunt to be over soon.
SHO Rajwinder Kaur said the administration had already directed banks not to keep the ATMs open beyond 10pm. “It was not safe after that,” she added.
