punjab Updated: Mar 24, 2013 18:49 IST

An attempt to murder case has been filed against a BJP youth leader of Mukerian and his friend for shooting at one of their acquaintances after a verbal altercation.

Gagandeep Sabi, said to be a close aide of former BJP minister Arunesh Shakir and his friend Pardip Singh of Himmatpura, reportedly had a verbal duel with Pavitar Singh (29) of Amma Mangat village, when they were having a drink together on the banks of Beas river near Terkiana.

The fight led to one of the accused opening fire with a .32 bore revolver, leaving Pavitar seriously injured with a bullet in his head. He was first rushed to a nearby hospital from where he was shifted to DMCH Ludhiana.

Police said that when the situation turned tense, Pavitar had called his brother Mandeep to the spot on whose statement a case was registered against Gagandeep and Pardip under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 506 (criminal conspiracy) 34 (act performed by several persons) of the IPC in Dasuya police station.

The victim is in critical condition. Police are yet to arrest the accused.
