Officials of the traffic wing on Tuesday nabbed an auto-rickshaw driver for allegedly robbing his passenger of Rs 25,000 and then throwing him out on the road near Bharat Nagar Chowk.
The accused, who was identified as Lakhu Kumar Sahni, resident of New Janta Nagar, was handed over to the CIA staff-1.
The victim, Gurjit Singh of Jagraon, said his father, Randhir Singh, was admitted in Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for the past few days. Therefore, he returned to his village to arrange some money for his father’s treatment. On Tuesday, he arranged ` 25,000 and boarded a threewheeler from the bus stand to go to the DMCH.
As soon as the three-wheeler reached near Bharat Nagar Chowk, three more persons boarded the vehicle, before snatching his ` 25,000 and throwing him out on the road.
Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Hardev Singh of traffic wing, who was deputed at the chowk, along with other police officials, saw Gurjit fall out of the auto, and smelled a rat.
“I , along with constables Jasbir Singh, Khareti Lal and Sukhwinder Singh, chased the auto-rickshaw and managed to nab the three-wheeler driver. However, his accomplices managed to flee. But, we recovered the ` 25,000 from the accused’s possession and handed it over to Gurjit,” the ASI added.
The CIA staff-1 are interrogating the accused before registering a case.
