Condemning the action taken by the Amritsar traffic police against illegal auto-rickshaws, the auto-rickshaw union in the city observed a strike on Wednesday.

Consequently, auto-rickshaw services remained unavailable in a number of areas in the city, much to the inconvenience of those commuting regularly by these vehicles.

Charging the police with initiating unwarranted action against them and depriving them of their livelihood, the protestors staged a demonstration in this regard at Bhandari Bridge.

Meanwhile, Amritsar police commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh said that the police would continue its action against the unauthorised auto-rickshaws plying in the city. "The owners of a number of these auto-rickshaws lack documents. We will not take a backseat. We will ensure that those sans documents are challaned," he said.
