The college management and city police kept incident under wrap for a while, before handing over the body to the victim’s family without conducting post-mortem till Friday afternoon.
As mediapersons gathered outside the college, the management said no such incident took place. The police, however, broke the silence at 2 pm till when the victim’s body had been shifted to her village.
The police said Jyoti had joined the college four days back after a brief vacation with family and was reportedly depressed for unknown reasons.
The incident came to light when one of her roommates and another student went to the room but were shocked to find her body hanging with fan.
Jyoti had also broken the SIM of her mobile phone in her hostel room.
Her two cousins, who also study at the college, told the police that Jyoti was not depressed and was happy.
The police said Jyoti had secured second position in a mime competition at the youth festival held recently. She had also gone to a gurdwara on Thursday to pay obeisance and partook langar with her cousins.
