Congress MLA from Amritsar-West and vice-chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes Dr Raj Kumar Verka on Monday slammed the state government for not doing much for the families of freedom fighters and turning a blind eye to their needs.

“The Punjab government did not address the issues of families of freedom fighters during the inauguration of Jang-eAzadi memorial at Kartarpur. According to family members, the government had promised to address their concerns during the function,” he said.

A delegation led by Punjab state freedom fighters successors organisation Gyan Singh Saggu met Verka on Monday. “We have been raising our demands with chief minister Parkash Singh Badal for the past few months. He promised us that they will make an announcement during the function, but nothing was done,” he said.

Dr Verka said if voted in power, the Congress will look into the concerns, while advising the CM to form a panel to look into the demands.
