Punjab Congress spokesman Sukhpal Singh Khaira on Monday accused Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal of denigrating the institution of Akal Takht by misusing it to settle political scores.
Khaira said three recent edicts issued by the Akal Takht jathedar pertaining to the formation of the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC) clearly indicated that the strings were being pulled by Badal to pursue his political agenda.
Khaira said the excommunication of three Haryana Sikh leaders, the cancellation of Akali conclaves and the order restraining the HSGMC from functioning had all been done at the behest of Badal and not in the interest of the Sikh Panth.
“By opposing the creation of the HSGMC, Badal is desperately trying to regain his lost grip over the Sikh community, evident from the Lok Sabha poll results. The shrewd Badal, realising that he had lost the Panthic agenda, embarked upon creating an emotional and sentimental issue by opposing the formation of the HSGMC,” said Khaira.
