Tension prevailed in Sarabha Nagar area here as supporters of Independent Lok Sabha candidate MLA Simarjit Singh Bains and Shiromani Akali Dal nominee Manpreet Singh Ayali clashed on Saturday night.
It is learnt that supporters of Simarjit Bains had come to Sarabha Nagar market for pasting posters. Ayali’s supporters, who were present in the market, tried to stall the process, resulting into an altercation.
The police immediately intervened and arrested the supporters of Bains, which further escalated the tension. Simarjit Bains then reached Sarabha Nagar police station with a large number of supporters, armed with bamboo sticks.
SHO Srabha Nagar Amarinder Singh said that following the recovery of some sharp-edged weapons from the vehicles of supporters of Bains, the police registered FIR against six persons.
As the Bains’ supporters protested against police action, Ayali’s men also also got agitated. Both groups indulged in stone pelting and damaged each others’ vehicles.
The police were trying to bring the situation under control till the filing of this report.
Two factions of Youth Akali Dal (YAD) had a clash in Sarabha Nagar on February 28, wherein 170 rounds were fired. Six persons were injured in the incident.
