A relative of Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa was on Monday run over by a truck during morning walk in Machhiwara's grain market and police have arrested two teenagers to know if it was accident or murder.

Victim Amrik Singh Kahlon (65) was a commission agent married to one of Bajwa's cousins. Around 6.40am, he left home, and around 7am, his crushed body lay on roadside. Khanna's senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sushil Kumar and SP (headquarters) Satinder Pal Singh examined the spot.

Kahlon's jacket had tyre marks from a truck parked nearby. Police rounded up its owner, Gurcharan Singh of Khanna, who said the truck was in the hands of his two employees, Ravi Kumar (19) of Nawanshahr and a Samrala boy (14). The teenagers accepted they had driven the truck to the grain market in the morning and because of fog, failed to notice if it had mowed down anyone.

Pressed harder, they told police they had abandoned the truck after realising they had killed a man by accident, and before fleeing, also tried to remove Kahlon's jacket from the tyres.

Police claim to have found that the accused were under the influence of drugs during the incident and they have criminal history of burglaries.
