Bajwa loses in all nine assembly segments of Gurdaspur LS seat

punjab Updated: May 18, 2014 09:13 IST

The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Partap Singh Bajwa, who was trounced by a margin of over 1.36 lakh votes by Bollywoond star and BJP candidate Vinod Khanna in Gurdaspur constituency, lost from all the nine assembly segments, including his own constituency, Qadian, from where his wife Charanjit Kaur is an MLA.

A study of the detailed results showed that Bajwa lost from all the five assembly segments held by the Congress. Besides Qadian, these were Batala, Dinanagar, Fatehgarh Churian and Dera Baba Nanak.

From Qadian, often considered as his stronghold, the PPCC chief lost by a margin of 2,426 votes.

His biggest loss came from Dera Baba Nanak where he lost by 25,384 votes and from Fatehgarh Churian, he trailed by 18,595 votes. In Batala, Bajwa trailed by around 4,000 votes and in Dinanagar he lost by over 6000 votes.

In 2009 Lok Sabha polls, the massive leads in Qadian and Batala were primarily responsible for tilting the scales in favour of Bajwa.

Bajwa also lost from Gurdaspur assembly segment by a margin of over 16,000 votes. This seat is held by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in the assembly.

Besides trailing in the assembly segments that are represented by the Akalis, Bajwa lost quite heavily from the three BJP-held assembly seats of Pathankot (20,932 votes), Bhoa (17,741 votes) and Sujanpur by a margin of
over 20,000 votes.

The question whether Bajwa got the desired support from Amarinder loyalists can at best be answered by him.

However, he lost heavily from Fatehgarh Churian where Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa, a known detractor of the PPCC chief, is the MLA and also from Dera Baba Nanak where Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, a Amarinder loyalist, is the MLA.

Even Batala MLA Ashwani Sekhri has not been on best of terms with the PPCC chief for quite some time.
