Leaders of Socialist Party (India), CPI (M), CPI, SAD (Amritsar), Aam Admi Party (AAP), Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Saini Jagriti Manch have called for a district bandh on March 29 to protest against the proposed levy of property tax. The Property Tax Virodhi Sangharash Committee held a rally in front of municipal library on Monday and decided to intensify the struggle to press the government to roll back the new levy.

The bandh would be a symbolic protest and the protestors claimed that would prolong the stir, if desired. Former Congress minister Naresh Thakur also joined the protest. Sandip Saini was appointed convener of the agitation.

Socialist Party leader Balwant Singh Khera said that people of the state were already bearing a heavy burden of levies and the new tax would only add to their woes.

He said the government was playing vote bank politics and in order to run its populist schemes, it was putting crushing burden on the urban consumers. He criticised the BJP also for not opposing the move, which affected its core vote bank.

AAP activists Naveen Jairth feared that the tax would be imposed in an arbitrary manner by the respective civic bodies to fleece the public. SDP president Jai Gopal Dhiman said that the government's policies reminded one of the foreign rule. He also demanded that the illegal Jazia must be rolled back.
