A bandh was observed here on Saturday on the call given by various Hindu organisations, including Bajrang Dal, Vishav Hindu Shakti Parishad, Vishav Hindu Parishad and Shiv Sena (Bal Thackeray), to protest against the recovery of cow remains at Malerkotla, Sangrur district, two days ago.

All the main roads and business areas wore a deserted look as people chose not to come out on roads. Some youths, who were seen moving on scooters and motorcycles with sharp-edged weapons and wooden sticks in their hands, forced some of the shopkeepers to close their shops. Activists held rallies at a number of places and demanded a law to punish the miscreants responsible for the killing of cows.

Rahul Sharma, president of the Vishav Hindu Shakti Parishad, said, "A CBI inquiry should be conducted into the incident. If the state government failed to save cows in Punjab, the VHSP will start an agitation in the state," he said.
