Normal services at all public sector banks in Karnal and adjoining districts were completely paralysed on Wednesday as employees observed one-day strike to seek wage revision and other demands.
United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella organisation of various public sector banks employees and officers' associations, had given a call of strike on Wednesday.
Reports said services such as cheque clearance and withdrawal from branches were hit.
However, sources said ATMs functioned normally at most of the places. Private sector banks were not part of the strike.
Protesting employees raised slogans against the bank authorities and the Indian Banks Association and demanded immediate pay scale revision.
Resham Lal, a UFBU leader in Karnal, said if their demands were not met, they would go on nationwide strike.
"The wage revision of public sector bank employees has been due since November 2012 but the authorities are adamant not to accept salary revision. We regret inconvenience to the general public and we have been informing them that the bank employees were compelled to strike by the bank managements who do not have pro-workers mindset," said the representative.
