Two youths were arrested on Sunday for allegedly killing a government schoolteacher when she resisted their attempts to molest her during a marriage function at Dhindsa resorts here.
The victim was a computer teacher at Government Senior Secondary School, Wadala Granthia.
The two accused have been identified as Parminder Singh alias Manna, resident of Dalla village and Nav Karan Singh, resident of Aulakh Kala village.
In his complaint, the victim’s husband, a Batala resident, said he along with his wife and kids had gone to Dhindsa resorts to attend a marriage ceremony of their close relative. “My wife went to an ice-cream stall and when she was coming back, two youths passed some lewd remarks at her and tried to molest her. When she resisted, one of them took out a pistol and opened fire at her and she died on the spot. The bullet pierced through her head”, he added.
The accused, who were under the influence of some narcotic substance, tried to run away but were overpowered by the people and handed over to police.
Eyewitnesses said the accused were following the victim and passing lewd remarks at her during the function.
Batala senior superintendent of police Daljinder Singh said weapon used in the crime has been recovered. During initial investigation it was learnt that the accused had passed indecent remarks at the woman.
It was also learnt that the pistol used in the crime was illegal. A case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act has been registered against the accused.
