Bathinda: Debt-ridden farmer of Daulatpura village commits suicide

A debt-ridden farmer of Daulatpura village, identified as Rajinder Singh, 45, who had consumed some poison on Thursday, died at a private hospital here on Friday.

Investigating officer said that the victim's wife has stated that her husband was undergoing stress as the cotton crop was damaged to a large extent due to t4h attack of whitefly.

"My husband was already under a debt of about `3 lakh that he had taken from banks and money-lenders, but the damage to cotton crop depressed him further and, on Thursday, when went to fields, he consumed some poison there," she told the police at Balianwali police station. Police have handed over the body to the family after conducting postmortem and inquest proceedings under section 174 IPC have been started.
