Decomposing bodies of an elderly man and his wife were discovered dead in their rented accommodation in a house in Adarsh Society on the Goniana road here on Wednesday afternoon, and it was suspected that they committed suicide over a month ago.

The bodies of Satish Kumar, 70, and wife, Raj Rani, 65, were found in their first-floor rented portion of the house around 4pm by the owners, who had come back from their native town Paonta Sahib in Himachal Pradesh where they had gone in May, police said.

Satish Kumar was a retired bank employee and was living with his wife here for the past over two years. Police found a bottle of pesticide in their home indicating suicide by drinking the poisonous substance.

Station hose officer (SHO) of the Thermal Plant police station, Jai Singh, said house owner Gursharan Singh developed suspicion due to the foul smell emanating from the first floor. Gursharan told the police that he had talked to the couple “about 20 days back”.

However, Darshan Singh, a man who supplied milk to the couple, said that nobody had been coming down to receive supplies since the first week of July. The bodies were taken to the Bathinda civil hospital for post-mortem examination, and police were, till the night, trying to contact the family of the couple.
