Bathinda: Key factors
Here is a look at the key factors at play in this constituencypunjab Updated: Apr 29, 2014 16:46 IST
Health and environment: The region is cancer-afflicted. But there has been no change in the fate of natives as the area still lacks a good institute to treat cancer. Water in the region car-ries heavy metals. However, no research was carried out to reach at the root of the problem. Three power plants and an oil refinery fall in the constituency, leading to environmental hazard.
Cotton crisis: The cotton belt of the state faced a crisis due to high fluctuation in cotton prices. Many farmers and labourers committed suicide after failing in cotton farming. High use of pes-ticides to save cotton from white fly also increased the threat of cancer in the region. Introduction of BT cotton in 2005 brought some relief to farmers. However, respective governments' failure to set up textile industry is negating farmers' hard work.
Dera-Sikh clashes: The region witnessed violence after the Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda head allegedly wore a dress similar to that of Guru Gobind Singh. The dera had openly supported the Congress in the 2007 assem-bly elections. The party has not come to power in the state after that. The ruling Badal family has never visited the dera publicly, but they are alleged to have a political understanding with the dera.
