Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal woos people with 'AIIMS achievement'

Even as political leaders from the Doaba region, including those of the Congress and a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA, are demanding the setting up the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in their region, Bathinda MP and union food processing industries minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal seemed to be going all out to woo the residents here by flaunting her achievement of bringing the premier institution to the district.

The stress on the achievement was evident from her speeches during the sangat darshan programmes in the villages in the district on Monday in which she, besides mentioning other achievements of the state and Union governments highlighted the sanction of the AIIMS and its location in the district.

She said that setting up of such an institution would provide better health facilities to the people of this region infested by cancer. To strike a better chord among the voters, she said: "The level of doctors in AIIMS is very high. Even prime ministers and presidents of India get treatment at the AIIMS in Delhi, so we can guess the level of the treatment people would get at the AIIMS in Bathinda. Moreover, the treatment at the institution is free for all. This will benefit the people a lot as quality medical institutions of Chandigarh, Ludhiana and Fardikot are far away from Bathinda," she said.

Criticising Congress leaders for demanding the AIIMS in Doaba, she said, "Is Bathinda not part of Punjab. Are the people of the region not suffering from deadly cancer? I don't understand why Congressmen are making such a hue cry over the setting up of the AIIMS in Bathinda."

A similar demand of setting up the AIIMS in Jalandhar or a nearby area by BJP MLA Manoranjan Kalia on his Facebook page seemed to have perturbed her more.

Asked about it, she termed it very sad saying that Kalia was, in fact, questioning the decision of his own government. Virtually taking a dig at Kalia, she said that if he is feeling "pained" at the decision, he should ask about it from his own government at the Centre. Besides Kalia, Congress' Jalandhar MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary and Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira have been demanding the setting up of the AIIMS in Kapurthala district as per the earlier plan.

It is noteworthy that after the formation of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre last year, an AIIMS was sanctioned to be set up in Punjab after which the chief minister had announced to set up it in the Doaba region and land in Kapurthala district was identified for this.

However, soon after the same institution found mention in the Union budget for 2015-16 in February, Harsimrat Kaur demanded to set up the institution at Bathinda. After this, a team of health officials had visited Bathinda for identifying land for this purpose. Punjab chief secretary Sarvesh Kaushal had made it clear last week at Jalandhar that the institution would be set up in Bathinda only.
