The Sangrur police busted an inter-state drug racket by seizing 3,700kg of poppy husk and from a truck and arresting two people.
However, the police have failed to arrest the kingpin of the gang, identified as Raghubeer Singh of Jalwana in Barnala district. Those arrested are Nirmal Singh of Badaundi in Ludhiana district and Gagan Jeet Singh of Veer Nagar, Mansa.
Talking to the mediapersons here on Wednesday, SSP Mandeep Singh Sidhu said that with the help of counter intelligence wing, the police seized 185 bags of poppy husk valued at `75 lakh. He said that the bags of contraband were hidden under those of onions. According to the driver, the contrabnd was being smuggled from Rajasthan, added the SSP.
Meanwhile, the police also seized 540kg of poppy husk from the rented house of Rghubeer Singh in Ludhiana, the SSP said, adding that Raghubeer had hired a house of his England-based cousin in Ludhiana and was operating the poppy husk trade from there.
Replying to a question about the increasing smuggling of poppy husk in the district, the SSP said, "We cannot say that the smuggling has increased, but I can assure you that the seizure of drugs by the police has definitely increased."
About involvement of Raghubeer's NRI cousin in the drug smuggling, the SSP said that there was no proof to prove that.
The SSP also said that during interrogation, the truck driver admitted that this was his second trip, wherein he brought poppy husk from Rajasthan to Punjab.
