The multipurpose stadium here was witness to a riot of colours as more than 2,200 athletes reached the venue to participate in the three-day 39th Punjab State Woman Games, here on Thursday.
Punjab education minister Sikandar Singh Maluka inaugurated the event. The minister claimed that the state government was adamant and wanted to lift the standard of sports and was spending a lot on the construction of new stadiums and uplift of infrastructure in the state.
"A drug-free society can only be created through involving the youth in sports," he said. Punjab assistant director sports Rupinder Singh welcomed the chief guest and others present on the occasion.
In the 800 m race, Sharanjit Kaur of Gurdaspur bagged gold, Lovepreet Kaur of Bathinda won the silver whereas Ramandeep Kaur of Ludhiana bagged the bronze. Amarvir Kaur of Amritsar clinched gold in the high-jump category with a leap 1.53 m high, Avneet Kaur Bajwa of Jalandhar bagged the silver by jumping 1.53 m, but was second due to difference in attempts; Sandeep Kaur of Sangrur received bronze at 1.51 metres.
In the 100 m athletics hurdle, Harkirat Kaur of Jalandhar won gold, Anju Rani from Jalandhar won a silver, whereas Kulwinder Kaur from Sangrur bagged the bronze.
Harkirat Kaur of Jalandhar bagged gold in the shotput with 12.44 m, Manpreet Kaur of Patiala won Silver with 11.55m and Gurleen Kaur of Tarn Taran throw the iron ball to a distance of 10.10 m, winning the bronze.
In the first rounds of Kho-Kho Gurdaspur defeated Fazilka 5-4, Ferozepur outclassed Tarn Taran 11-1, Hoshiarpur beat Pathankot 6-5 and Moga outplayed Fatehgarh Sahib 12-1. In Kabaddi, Gurdaspur beat Barnala 29-8, Ropar outplayed Fatehgarh Sahib 44-3, Ludhiana crushed Mohali 25-2 where as Sangrur defeated Tarn Taran by 45 points.
In Volleyball, Patiala defeated Fazilka, Jalandhar ousted Pathankot, Bathinda beat Nawanshahr, Sangrur outplayed Fatehgarh Sahib, Mukatsar defeated Ferozepur, Ropar beat Amritsar, Moga defeated Tarn Taran and Hoshiarpur beat Gurdaspur.
In Handball, Hoshiarpur defeated Sangrur 10-2, Amritsar crushed Gurdaspur 16-4, Tarn Taran beat Bathinda 16-10, Ropar ousted Ferozepur 13-4, Mukatsar Sahib defeated Barnala 5-0, Moga defeated SAS Nagar 13-3 and Ludhiana beat Faridkot 13-7.
In Basket Ball, Sangrur ousted SAS Nagar 51-21, Hoshiarpur outplayed Moga 41-10 and Jalandhar beat Barnala 61-15.
