A 27-year-old businessman from Moga district was shot dead at Manila in the Philippines on Wednesday. Nirmal Singh, a native of Tatarea Wala village, 13 km from here, had been running a business in Manila since 2006.

The family said Nirmal was attacked outside Manila City by unidentified masked assailants. No motive has been established yet. Meanwhile, a pall of gloom descended on the village on Thursday after Nirmal’s friends Ajmer Singh and Ram Singh, who have been staying in the Philippines for the past seven years, conveyed the news to his parents.

According to the family, Nirmal was shot outside Manila City by some assailants, who had their faces covered, while he was travelling on the highway on a motorcycle. Nirmal was returning to his company office after collecting weekly instalments when the incident took place, they added.

Victim’s father Sohan Singh said, “When Nirmal had gone to Manila seven years ago on a work-permit visa, we thought all our financial woes would come to an end as my hard-working son would be a success story in the foreign land. However, fate had something else in store for us.”

Sohan said, “I had taken Rs. 7 lakh on loan as my son wanted to make a career in the finance sector in the Philippines. Now I think I will not be able to return this money in time. After this news, all my hopes have been dashed to the ground. We will try to bring back Nirmal’s body soon and will also approach the Centre as well as the state government.”

Manufacturers, packaging units of food items flouting laws

Manufacturers of food items here seem to have no fear of law as packaging of home-made snacks and other products is being done without any mention of expiry and manufacturing details. Most shops and bakeries are selling items like chips, cakes, pastries etc in packets which don't mention manufacturing date, expiry date, the  manufacturer's address etc.
