Lashing out at the senior Congress leadership and the UPA government, Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, on Thursday, said that the Congress was like a sinking ship with every leader and worker in it trying to escape to a safer destination.

Addressing a rally organised by former agriculture minister Jathedar Tota Singh at Dharamkot in the district, Badal said the Congress had always played the role of a spoiler by ignoring financial, social, religious and other demands of Punjabis.

Interestingly, local SAD leaders preferred to use tractor-trolleys for bringing workers at a rally due to the model code of conduct. Even Jathedar Tota Singh reached the rally venue with his supporters in a tractor.

Terming Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi as the most eligible person for the coveted office of the prime minister, Badal said, with the formation of the NDA government at the Centre under his leadership, a new era of unprecedented development and prosperity would begin in the state.

Reiterating that the SAD-BJP alliance would sweep the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls, the chief minister said the SAD-BJP alliance is contesting the elections on the plank of development, peace and communal harmony.

Badal said, “It was unfortunate that the hardworking and resilient farmers of Punjab, who had played a pivotal role in making the country self-reliant in food production, were not getting remunerative prices for their crops despite the fact that the ever-accelerating costs of agricultural inputs have reduced farming to a non-profitable proposition.”

The chief minister said productive debt for the sake of development was a global phenomena and Punjab was no exception to it.

He said, “It was on record that the state had witnessed unprecedented development in all sectors during the past seven years of the SAD-BJP rule.”

“Due to stupendous efforts of the state government, Punjab today leads the country in the field of education and had been adjudged excellent by an agency of the union government for infrastructure in the field of health services,” he added.

Prominent among those who addressed the gathering included former agriculture minister Tota Singh, member of Parliament Paramjeet Kaur Gulshan, Barjinder Singh Brar, chairman of the Punjab Health Systems Corporation (PHSC), BJP vice-president Mohan Lal Sethi.
