Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, on Saturday, preferred to remain silent over the announcement of resignation as president of the Youth Akali Dal (YAD) made by cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia. Majithia had said on Friday that he was going to resign from the party post very soon.  When asked to comment, Badal said, “Only Sukhbir Singh Badal can comment on it as he is president of the party and this issue comes under his realm.”

Badal was here to address a Sangat Darshan programme. Jeet Mohinder Singh Sidhu of SAD had recently won the assembly byelection held here. Majithia had also said that it was very important to remain in good books of the chief minister.

Later, expressing concern over the incident of a brawl in Kuwait, where 24 Punjabi youths have been detained by the Kuwait police, the chief minister said that he would soon talk to union minister for external affairs Sushma Swaraj for immediately providing all possible help to the Punjabis in distress and urge the urge the union government to use all diplomatic channels to ensure their safety and security.

Talking to mediapersons on the first day of his three-day thanksgiving tour in the assembly constituency,  Badal said that the secretary of the external affairs ministry had informed him about the efforts being made to help the Punjabis injured and arrested in the brawl in Kuwait.

He said that only the union government can take up such issues with other countries as states have no role to play except urging the Centre to take appropriate action in such cases. It was during the campaigning that the chief minister had promised to the people of Talwandi Sabo that he would come back immediately after elections would be over.

Addressing representatives of panchayats and wards, Badal asked them to be extra-vigilant when surveys of beneficiary schemes were conducted to ensure that every genuine beneficiary must get benefit of these schemes.

He said that by electing Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP candidate Jeet Mohinder Singh Sidhu by a huge margin, the people of the constituency have created a history.

Badal said that this victory has invigorated new enthusiasm among the party leaders and workers alike. He said that this spectacular victory is the triumph of pro-people policies and programmes of the SAD-BJP government.

The chief minister also laid the foundation stone of a new sabji mandi to be constructed over an area of 1.18 acres at a cost of Rs. 1.23 crore and completed within three months.
