Even after four years of its establishment, the cancer department at the local Guru Gobind Singh Medical College has failed to meet the needs and expectations of the patients.
The department has not even been able to provide the patients with bathrooms/toilets facility inside the OPD.
"The patients and attendants have to go to some other place in the hospital to use toilets. There are bathrooms but they are locked," alleges Niranjan Singh, a resident of Gidderbaha in Muktsar district, who visited the department for the treatment of breast cancer to his wife.
"I am a government employee and have to claim the expenses incurred on my wife's treatment from the government. I have been coming here for days just to complete the file," claims Singh.
He says the cancer hospital in Bikaner in Rajasthan was better.Patients can be seen lying on the floor as there is a lack of proper seating arrangement in the OPD.
The medical college has been spending crores on the construction work; however, it has failed to meet the needs of the patients. Another patient says some of the fans are non-functional.
"The government has arranged for cheap cancer medicines in the medical college, but the university, instead of running the control-rate chemist shop itself, has handed it over to the main chemist. It should be run by the hospital/university directly," demands Gurpreet Singh Chandbaja, president of Bhai Kanahia Cancer Roko Sewa Society.
"The cancer department should display detailed instructions about the procedure to claim the chief minister's relief fund at the main entrance in Punjabi so that the patients can get benefit of it," says Darshan Singh of Dhilwan village.
Dr JC Sanadhya, medical superintendent, says, "The medicines are being provided at controlled rates at the shops being run by chemists." About toilets/bathrooms, he says they were planning to shift the cancer OPD to another place where all facilities will be provided.
"There may be some loopholes, but we will try to remove them," says Dr HP Yadav, head of the cancer department.
