Lashing out at Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa, his predecessor and former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh here on Thursday said he (Bajwa) was making ridiculous and stupid statements about his (Amarinder's) public meetings across the state being nothing more than "tea-party stopovers".

Talking to HT, the Captain said, "I am attending these meetings on the instructions of the party high command. How does Bajwa know what the high command has asked me to do? Congress president Sonia Gandhi wants me to play an elemental role in motivating the party cadre and that is precisely what I am doing. I have been there for long and it's time for me to take up the role of a senior leader."

Referring to the crowd of more than 1,000, including party workers and common people, that had gathered to meet him during his stopover at a resort here on the way to Makhu (Ferozepur), he said, "Bajwa should have known better had he seen this rush of people eager to meet me. That is why I reiterate that he should concentrate on his work."

When asked about the impact the war of words between him and Bajwa could have on the Congress' prospects in the Lok Sabha elections, he said, "I have just said that nobody is above the law and everything should come out in the open before the public. It is Bajwa who is coming up with controversial statements, but all this is irrelevant for the people of Punjab as they are concerned about issues such as corruption, taxes and crime," the Captain added.

On his detractors accusing him of nursing the ambition of dethroning Bajwa, Amarinder said it was for the Congress president to decide whether she wanted to bring him back. "But being a member of the Congress Working Committee, it is my job to work in the best interests of the party. Bajwa should also refrain from giving irresponsible statements," the former CM said.
