Himanshu Aggarwal, a 26-year-old doctor from this border town, has secured 28th all-India rank in the civil services exam held by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), the final results of which came out on Thursday. Having cleared the exam in his second attempt, this puts him among toppers from the northern states.

Overall, Jaipur’s Gaurav Agrawal got the first rank making him the first male topper in four years.

Delhi’s Munish Sharma and Rachit Raj are second and third. Himanshu, son of Surinder Aggarwal, a contractor with the Indian army and resident of Ferozepur Cantonment, he achieved the 28th rank without any special coaching. An alumnus of DC Model School, Himanshu did his MBBS from Faridkot before joining the state health services three and a half years ago. He is posted at the rural health centre in Sandhe Hasham near Ferozepur.

“The son of a deputy commissioner was my classmate in school. Since then, I dreamed of becoming a ‘DC’,” Himanshu told HT. His chosen subject for the UPSC exam was political science.

About being from a rather backward area, he said, “My experience of working for the last few years in rural areas will help me do justice to my new assignment. People remain unaware of various schemes of the government.”

“Our son has proved that it hardly matters whether you live in a metro city or a remote, backward town on the border with Pakistan,” said proud father Surinder Aggarwal.
