A prisoner of the district jail here was seriously injured in an attack by fellow inmates on Monday.
The injured Gurmeet Singh alias Kala Mann, head of the Kala Dhanaula gang, who has been serving a jail term in 14 cases, was referred to Rajindera Hospital, Patiala, from the civil hospital here.
An officer of the jail, on the condition of anonymity, said that the incident took place at 6 am on Monday, when, at least 10 prisoners, members of a Ludhiana-based gang, forcibly entered ward no. 6 of the jail where Gurmeet was lodged.
"They beat him up with wooden sticks till the jail authorities intervened," he said, adding, "Gurmeet suffered injuries on his leg, shoulder and head and the jail authorities had filed a complaint against 10 prisoners".
After the incident, Gurmeet was taken to the civil hospital here from where he was referred to Patiala for further treatment.
Talking to the Hindustan Times, city police station in-charge Harinder Singh confirmed that Rupinder Singh alias Ricky along with 9 inmates attacked Gurmeet, injuring him seriously. He said that the jail authorities have filed a complaint against 10 inmates, and the case will be lodged after a brief discussion with higher officers.
Dr BK Sharada, medical superintendent of Rajindra Hospital said that Gurmeet has been kept in the prisoners' ward and he is out of danger.
