Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal has accused the Congress of pursuing its alleged policy of meddling in the religious affairs of Sikhs.

He claimed that the Congress was trying to undermine the position of the Akal Takht jathedar through its "B team" led by former Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee president Paramjeet Singh Sarna.

Interacting with reporters on the sidelines of a sangat darshan programme in the Lambi assembly segment here on Saturday, Badal said the filing of a petition against the Akal Takht jathedar through an aide of Sarna showed that the Congress was trying to denigrate the revered position of the jathedar.

He said that from time immemorial, no one had questioned the authority of the Akal Takht jathedar as the Akal Takht is the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, and even Maharaja Ranjit Singh had held it in high esteem.

Badal said, "By resorting to such cheap tactics, the Congress and its agents were trying to dent the authority of the jathedar, which was unacceptable to Sikhs."
