The Congress has alleged that the Punjab government had been indulging in a lot of wasteful expenditure in connection with the event.

"The Punjab government has no money to pay for schemes that help the common man, like the pension scheme, the shagun scheme and others and pays salaries to government employees; yet it can somehow afford to pay Rs. 6.5 crore for a dance performance to Priyanka Chopra," said former minister Harmander Jassi.

"Money is being wasted on the World Cup Kabaddi only to disguise real issues and problems of the masses. Even the sport is not benefitting as players are not given the promised jobs," he added.

Gidderbaha Congress MLA Amarinder Singh Raja Warring said, "When it comes to pay compensation to flood-hit families of Muktsar, the government made a mockery of the poor by offering as little as Rs. 3 as compensation. Now, it is spending crores of rupees on the inauguration ceremony. The government should first provide basic amenities to people. It should not exploit a sport to draw political benefits."
