Baba Parasmani, head of the sufi saint Baba Farid Dargah was cremated on Monday evening under heavy police protection.

The Dera head was shot dead by some unidentified armed men while he was treating a patient by giving him 'blessings' and sprinkling 'holy water' at the dargah on Saturday late evening.

Earlier, followers of the Baba gathered at the Sera and, after a meeting, they warned that if the police failed to nab the culprits, the Baba’s followers would not allow cremation of the body.

Some angry Dera followers also staged a protest against the police. They alleged that the Dera committee had given some names of the culprits, but the police have failed to get any single clue about them even after 48 hours.

Surjit Singh, a committee member said, “Baba Parasmani had no enmity with. However, we are waiting for the police response. I requested the Dera followers to maintain peace.”

Facing a critical situation, senior police officials met the committee members of the Dera and assured them that the accused will be nabbed soon.

After that, the followers allowed to cremate the body at the Dera complex. Hundreds of people, including several political leaders, were present on the occasion.

Senior superintendent of police Gursharan Singh Sandhu said that a special investigation team has been formed for solving the case.

“We have raided various places for catching the culprits. However, the police are working on all theories. I hope that we will nab the culprits soon,” said SSP.
