EGS, AIE teachers hold protest over ‘training hours in schools’

Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS), Alternative Innovative Education (AIE) and special trainer teachers, on Friday, held a protest here after they received a letter from the education secretary, Punjab, asking them not to use the school building premises for giving training to students during school hours.


State union president Kulwant Kumari said, “We have received a letter from the education secretary asking not to use the school building for giving training to students during school hours. For giving training to students, either we have to come before 8 am or after 2 pm.”

“When the union members were holding a protest, we were locked inside the teachers’ home and we were allowed to move out only after the SDM reached the spot.” “Tomorrow we have a meeting with the deputy commissioner of Bathinda, but we know noting concrete will come out.”

Speaking on the issue, deputy commssioner K K Yadav said, “There is some miscommunication between the education department and teachers. We have fixed a meeting with the education secretary education on Wednesday to look into the issue.”It may be recalled that EGS teachers had intensified their protest after the death of a 14-month-old daughter Rooth of an EGS teacher sitting on a dharna in February in the civil hospital. Rooth had died on February 6.

After a meeting with chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, it was decided that EGS teachers will be employed for two years by the government on contract basis. There are many teacher
