The city police have booked Nishan Singh, the main accused in the Faridkot abduction and rape case, after the father of the victim complained that he got a threatening call at about 9.30 pm on Wednesday.

The victim's father alleged that the caller, who identified himself as Nishan Singh, warned him of dire consequences if he deposed as a witness in the court. He, however, did appear in the court on Thursday in the abduction and rape case of his minor daughter.

The city police have registered a case under Sections 506/507 of the IPC and Section 66-A of the Information Technology Act against Nishan Singh. The call was reportedly made from a cellphone number (98133-67005), which, as per sources, does not belong to the Punjab series.

"We are trying to get the tower location and other details of the cellphone number from which the call was made. We expect to get the details by Friday after which further action will be taken," said Jaswinderpal Sharma, DSP, Faridkot.

The DSP added that police have provided the victim's parents round-the-clock security by a team of four police personnel headed by an ASI. "The team is also escorting them home after their appearance in the court," he added.

"If the caller had used a cellphone from the Faridkot jail premises, it is a serious offence. It reaffirms the alleged nexus between the accused with other criminals.  The police should take it very seriously and thorough investigations should be made into the incident," said Swarn Singh, a member of the Faridkot joint action committee.

Day-to-day hearing begins

After the framing of charges on Wednesday against all 20 accused in the Faridkot abduction case, including main accused Nishan Singh, by the district and sessions judge Archana Puri, the day-to-day proceedings in the case started on Thursday.

The sessions judge had taken up the case given its sensitive nature and decided to hold day-to-day hearing, excluding Sunday and court holidays, till February 5.

Nishan Singh is facing rape charges in two cases registered against him for alleged abduction and rape of the minor girl.
