Farmers urged to adopt bee-keeping for better income, diversification

To encourage adoption of agriculture-related professions by people in rural areas, a mega honey bee- keeping training camp was organised here on Wednesday.

Addressing the camp, attended by more than 1,000 farmers of various parts of the district, Jaswinder Kaur of Malwal village, revealed that she had been earning a handsome income from bee-keeping without much hard work along with traditional farming.

She exhorted other womenfolk in the camp to come forward and adopt such agri-related works like bee- keeping, piggery, rabbit-farming and horticulture etc to improve their economic condition.  
Jasvir Kaur, another woman of Bhanger village, disclosed that she had been running a piggery farmhouse and earning handsomely besides taking benefit of a subsidy scheme of the government.

Earlier, Punjab BJP chief Kamal Sharma, along with VK Sharma, commissioner of Ferozepur and Faridkot divisions, inaugurated the awareness camp and also released a booklet having detailed information about the benefits, purpose of agri-related professions and financial assistance by various banks.

DPS Kharbanda, deputy commissioner, Ferozepur, the brain behind the camp, jointly organised by the local Horticulture, Agriculture and Krishi Vigyan Centre, called upon participants to come out of the traditional wheat-paddy rotation and adopt diversification to not only earn more, but also to help out the government to protect the environment.

Kharbanda also applauded the women who had adopted agri-related vocations and asked others to follow them. Highlighting the benefits of bee-keeping, Yuvraj Singh Pandha, deputy director, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, said that there was huge scope in bee-keeping as there was much problem of marketing.

Bee-keeping could be started with a meagre investment of `2 lakh and there was a subsidy of `80,000 for it. Besides, a loan was easily available, he added.

Ferozepur ADC Amit Kumar and SDM Sandeep Gra were also present on the occasion.
