Trade across border: The closing of Hussainiwala joint check post for trade after the 1971 Indo-Pak war proved to be the death knell for local residents, especially traders. Being a border area, neither government nor any private entrepreneur took the initiative of setting up an industry here, which is the root cause of various problems, including unemployment, poverty and even indulgence into drugs by the youth, being frustrated.

Poor civic amenities: There is lack of basic civic infrastructure in the majority of the areas of Ferozepur. Lack of potable water and choked sewerage in various parts of the area have further worsened the woes of the common man.

Lack of higher education or medical facility: There is acute shortage of education avenues, while for any medical emergency, local residents have no option but to rush towards Ludhiana, Amritsar or Jalandhar.

With radical Sikh leader Baljit Singh Daduwal locked in jail for the past 10 days, Jandalisar gurdwara in Kotshamir, managed by him before his arrest, has been virtually taken over by a local member of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the policemen in civil dress bearing blue turbans and posing themselves as religious volunteers are allegedly assisting him.
