The 23-member municipal council is a divided house even as there is no opposition leader within their midst. Of the 23, 15 members are from SAD and eight from the BJP.

However, such is the state of affairs that SAD councillor from ward number 16, Daleep Singh, threatened to commit suicide in protest against the lack of development in his area. He claimed that council president Mitt Singh Brar had been discriminating against his ward in allocation of funds and resources.

Interestingly, the voice of dissent has been raised as the MC term is about end. As promised, councillor Daleep Singh reached the Masjid Chowk to commit suicide on Tuesday, but preferred to carry out a protest march with his supporters.

Three more SAD councillors Surjit Kaur, Surinder Chinda and Sukhdev Sukkha joined him in the protest.

"I kept on raising the issue of bad roads, streetlights and sewerage problem during all these five years in the house meetings. I was always assured that the funds will be released soon. Nothing was done."

The four councillors then went to the MC office, where president Brar was president, but he refused to meet them and left through a back door.

When contacted, Brar said, "Funds have been granted in all the wards. You can check the record of funds distribution. Allegations of bias are baseless."

No official check on sale of firecrackers in Mansa

The sellers of firecrackers in the city have ignored all the rules and warnings issued by the district administration. The administration had issued a circular on October 10 stating that the sale, purchase and bursting of crackers should be held in specified  areas only. The circular clearly highlighted the previous incidents of fire and accidents due to illegal storage of firecrackers. The administration has declared six locations across the district where the sale of firecrackers is permitted.
