Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal cautioned the voters of Moga on Monday that if they wanted development, they needed to vote in favour of Akali candidate Joginder Pal Jain.

Addressing a public meeting at Kaliyewala village on Monday, Badal said Jain had sacrificed his post of legislator for the sake of the development of the constituency. "If the Congress candidate wins the seat, he won't be able to lay even a single brick for development, because he will sit on the opposition bench," the CM added, highlighting the big scams of the Congress-led union government and suggesting that it had discriminated against the state.

The byelection was an opportunity to weed out the poisonous "Congress grass" from the environment of the country, the CM said. The state government had done a lot of development work in the constituency, and when Jain was elected again, it would do more, Badal added, regretting the Congress statements that the money for all development work in the area had come from the union government. "The union government takes away 70% of the central taxes collected in the state and returns only 1.3%, that too as loan," he said. "We seek a review of the revenue-sharing formula so that states get a minimum of 50% of the taxes collected by the Centre."

Namesakes of leaders have never fared well in elections

The impact of Manpreet Singh Badal’s namesake in Bathinda with his Badal tag and election symbol ‘kite’, which was the symbol of PPP during the last assembly elections, would be clear only after the poll results would be out, but past experience shows that namesakes have not fared well in elections. Whether they contested purposefully or spontaneously is a different matter.
