The Sanjha Morcha alliance is in the Moga assembly contest to rid the state of "mafia rule" and "threats to peace", People's Party of Punjab (PPP) leader Manpreet Singh Badal has said.

Addressing the political rally of the Sanjha Morcha at a historical gurdwara here on Monday, Manpreet trained guns on the state government, particularly deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. "The Shiromani Aklai Dal (SAD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are a dishonest combine and threats to Punjab, Punjabis, and Punjabiat," he said. "The leaders of these parties looted the state and defamed its rich culture world over."

Calling attention to the state's poverty and unemployment, he blamed both problems on corruption. "People seek their rights but the government is not bothered," he said, referring to recent public protests over the law and order situation.

Even the police were unsafe in the state, said Manpreet. "Akali leaders beat them up in public almost every day," he said, "but the chief minister and deputy CM act as if all is fine."

Poll planks

The Sanjha Morcha election planks will be law and order, the plight of farmers, and the rising cost of electricity, fuel, and construction material. "The PPP will co-operate with its alliance partners, the Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM), and Shiromani Akali Dal (Longowal)," said Manpreet. "After the Moga by-election, the Sanjha Morcha will launch a mass campaign to promote its ideology."

Bant Singh Brar, state secretary of the CPI; Jagroop Singh, former state secretary of the CPI; Ravinder Singh Dhaliwal, PPP candidate from Moga; and party leaders Kuldip Singh Dhos and Balkaran Singh Moga also addressed the gathering.
