A special vigilance team of the state local bodies department on Wednesday raided the municipal office here to look into embezzlement complaints.

The team read the files related to all development work completed in the past five years and went through the fire-brigade and road-maintenance record. The state government had received four complaints about the use of inferior material in the repair of roads.

Two of the complainants had sounded chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and vigilance bureau chief director Suresh Arora. After that, the government had forwarded the complaints to the head of the local bodies department.

VP Singh and Neeraj Bhatti, senior officers of the local bodies vigilance department who raided the municipal office, screened files and recorded statements for two hours. "The team will submit the inquiry report to the higher authorities," said VP Singh.

Kulbir Singh Brar, executive officer (EO) of the civic body, said he was unaware of the purpose of the raid. Joint municipal commissioner Joram Beda said the local bodies department had verified the record in normal routine. "The team examined no particular complaint. Some people did send their grievances to the state officers of the local bodies and today (Wednesday) the results of the works were confirmed," said Beda.

Wary Badal avoids mention of Modi govt

Possibly feeling that his speeches may be under close watch in view of the future of the political alliance between Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal avoided to make any mention of the newly formed Union government.
