Contrary to tall claims of the SAD-BJP government that there is no dearth of staff or funds to provide basic amenities to people of the state, inhabitants of more than 350 villages of Ferozepur under Mamdot block have been left at the mercy of paramedical staff or have to visit quacks in case of medical attention.

A newly-constructed primary health centre (PHC) at a village under Mamdot block is non-functional for want of staff and machinery for a year now.

A visit to Lakho Ke Behram village situated on the Ferozepur-Fazilka road revealed that a newly-constructed building of the PHC had not been inaugurated due to lack of medical doctors, staff and other required machinery.

More than 100 patients who visit the health centre every day have no option but to take medicines as 'instructed' by the paramedical staff, who were earlier working from the old small building of the centre as no doctor was posted there for the past many years.

"During every election, politicians from every party make tall claims to provide better services soon after coming to power, but later none of them heed to the suffering people," said Jaswant Kaur (53), a resident of the village.

"For every medical consultation or test - be it major or minor - we have no option but to travel to Ferozepur, 22 km away," rued Manjeet Singh, another villager.

Moreover, the civil hospital at Mamdot, a border rural town of Ferozepur under which PHC of Lakho Ke Behram falls, does not have any regular doctor and doctor visits here twice a week. The charge of senior medical officer of Mamdot has been allocated to the Guru Har Sahai SMO.

The five PHCs under Mamdot civil hospital and 37 sub-centres have only two doctors to cater to the medical needs of thousands of natives, said reports.

When contacted, YK Gupta, civil surgeon, Ferozepur, acknowledged that there is a shortage of staff. He, however, said every month the posting position of doctors is sent to higher medical authorities but all in vain.

Majority of doctors don't wish to join Ferozepur being a border backward area, hence doctors can only be posted at Mamdot, Lakho Ke Behram, if they are available in his office in future, he said.
