Fourteen-year-old Karan (name changed) who started taking drugs when he was just nine and is admitted to the Malout civil hospital is perhaps the first in his age group in the state to get treatment for de-addiction.

Worst, the minor, a resident of Camp locality in Malout, was taking drugs in the company of his father Rakesh Kumar, who is now in jail for allegedly selling contrabands.

Kailash Rani, the boy's grandmother, said he lost his mother 11 years ago following which his father started taking drugs.

Since Rakesh had no sufficient means to buy heroin so he started selling drugs to arrange the daily dose for himself.

Rakesh eventually discovered that his son had also started taking the same drug which he himself consumed and sold to others.

Instead of finding a solution to the problem, Rakesh reportedly started giving his son drug doses to keep the latter off pain.

However, Malout police ASI Gurdev Singh claimed that Rakesh used his son to sell the contraband as nobody would suspect a child to be a drug peddler.

Karan started tasting drugs when on the way to deliver them and soon became an addict.

He is learnt to have dropped out of school due to this.

"He passed Class 8 last year. The trouble started when he was in Class 9. He started skipping his classes. His teachers called me up several times to complain about this. Then they advised me to not send him to school as it was also affecting other children there. He was also not interested in going to school," said Kailash Rani.

The police have registered a case against Rakesh and admitted his son at hospital where he is undergoing treatment.

Kailash Rani had brought her grandson to de-addiction centre earlier also but then authorities told her to go to Faridkot. However, the boy was admitted this time due to police pressure.
