Even as more than 23 cases of dog bite have been reported in the district this year, so far, yet government hospitals and dispensaries across the district do not have the anti-rabies vaccine in stock. The Punjab Health Systems Corporation (PHSC) has not sent the stock of these vaccines to these hospitals for the past several months.

Patient are routinely referred to private hospitals to get a shot of the vaccine where it costs between `300 and `500 a dose, against `1,00 a dose mandated at government healthcare institutes.

What’s worse, the state health department does not seem to have a plan to tackle the issue.

When contacted, Barjinder Singh Brar PHSC chairman said, “We have decided to set up special teams for vaccination of stray dogs as soon as possible. I will discuss the matter with my bosses in the health department. The problem will be resolved soon.”

“The Moga municipal corporation and the councils of Baghapurana, Dharamkot and Badhni Kalan have failed to check the stray dog menace. This is a huge threat to the health and wellbeing of the residents,” claimed Dr Harjot Kamal, executive member, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee.

Dr Indervir Singh of civil hospital claimed that the victim of dog bite could die a painful death within 72 hours, if the treatment is not started in time.
