Gurjant Singh "Janta", main suspect in the killings of two brothers from the ruling party, is under arrest.

The police also claimed to have recovered the guns used the July 7 crime in which assailants shot the Khai siblings, sarpanch Gurmail Singh and Karamjit Singh, at their home. "After killing the two leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Gurjant had fled to Rajasthan first and then Mumbai," senior superintendent of police (SSP) Surjit Singh Grewal on Tuesday said here.

On Monday night, the special investigation team (SIT) on the suspect's trail received a secret input about his hiding at Lehra Bega village in Bathinda district. Partap Singh, in charge of the crime investigation agency (CIA) at Nihal Singh Wala, led the team that arrested the suspect and recovered what is said to be murder weapons.

The Akali brothers were shot at Khai in this district. Dharamjit Singh, one of the accomplices in the crime, who was from the same village, also had been killed in the incident.

The Nihal Singh Wala police had registered a case against Gurjant Singh, Malkit Singh, and Dharamjit Singh Dharma (all from Khai) and some unidentified people under Section 302 (murder), 303 (murder by life convict), 307 (attempt to murder), 392 (robbery), 148 (armed rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly), 182 (submitting false information to public servant to cause harm to someone) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 25 (certain offences), 27 (using, purchasing firearms for crime), 54 (renewal of licence), and 59 (fee payable on a petition for appeal) of the Arms Act.

Gurjant Singh, main suspect in this double murder case, was once an old-time confidant of the victims before his arrest five years ago on a charge of holding 80-kg poppy husk. He had supported the Khai brothers in many property disputes.

In October 2010, Gurjant Singh was sentenced to 10-year imprisonment in the drug-smuggling case, and a year later, he was out on a month's parole, which he jumped at the end of this period on June 13, 2011. Court declared him a fugitive.

"From Rajasthan, he bought an unlicensed double-barrel gun for Rs. 32,000 just for the purpose of killing the Khai brothers," said the SSP. "He accused them of laying a false charge on him after their falling out over some issue."

On Tuesday, a court remanded Gurjant Singh in police custody.
