The delay in laying of a sewerage line in an adjacent locality has made commuters as well as shopkeepers near Multania Chowk face an ugly and hazardous situation for the past more than a year.

A suction machine installed right in the middle of the road to transfer sewage from sewerage line of the localities from the government Rajindra college side to the line on the other side of the road has been troubling people.

As per locals, the suction machine was installed on a manhole in the middle of the road about a year ago to shift sewage from one sewerage line to the one on the other side. Even as it was a temporary arrangement, it seems that the machine will not be removed from the place anytime soon.

The sewerage line on which the suction pump has been installed has to be connected with the line being laid in the adjacent Police Lines Colony. But as the work on laying sewerage in the locality is slow, people are suffering on account of nuisance created by the machine and the foul smell that comes from the open space.

Baltej Singh Chauhan, a shopkeeper, said the suction machine has become a big problem for us. "Earlier, the engine used to work throughout the day, causing noise pollution," he said. "It was only after we collectively requested the municipal corporation officials to fix timings to run the machine that they started to run it in the morning and evening hours.

The machine, which is right in the middle to the road, remains a big problem for us particularly in the foggy weather," he said.

Another shopkeeper, Sandeep Singh, said, "Foul smell continues to emanate from the place, contaminating the environment. We have requested the officials to do away with the system by completing the laying of sewerage line as early as possible but there is no respite," he said.

Assistant commissioner, MCB, Kamal Kant Goyal said the machine is the lifeline of sewerage and it cannot be removed until sewerage line in the adjacent police colony is laid completely. Accepting that the work on the under-construction line was too slow due to some reasons, he said the corporation is expediting the work to settle the issue as soon as possible.

The suction machine that is situated at the existing spot for more than a year is a big problem for us. It creates a lot of noise pollution.
