The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has picked former Congress MLA Jeet Mohinder Singh Sidhu as the party candidate for the August 21 Talwandi Sabo assembly byelection.
Sidhu had joined the SAD after quitting the Congress ahead of the parliamentary elections, apparently to boost the electoral prospects of Akali MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal from Bathinda Lok Sabha constituency, under which the Talwandi Sabo segment falls.
Harsimrat had won the seat by a not-so-impressive margin of more than 19,000 votes. She had got a vital lead of around 11,000 votes from Sidhu’s assembly segment (Talwandi Sabo), which boosted his claim for the party ticket in the byelection. Sidhu had defeated Akali candidate Amarjit Singh Sidhu by 8,524 votes in the 2012 assembly polls.
Eyeing his candidature from the assembly segment, Sidhu had virtually chaired an official meeting called by the Bathinda district administration last month to oversee the progress of development works. Though the meeting was meant to review works in the entire district, Talwandi Sabo had dominated the proceedings.
Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had attended a series of sangat darshan programmes in the constituency last month.
