A five-year-old girl of Mandi Ladhuka village in Fazilka district was allegedly raped by a 15-year-old boy of the same village on Tuesday.

According to information, the girl, a class-2 student, along with her cousin, went out to play, where Kaka Singh committed the crime. The girl informed her parents and was taken to the civil hospital, Fazilka, but due to non-availability of a gynaecologist, she was referred to Guru Gobind Medical College and Hospital, Faridkot, and is under treatment there.

Fazilka Sadar SHO Barjinder Singh said the accused had been booked on the basis of the statement of the mother of the victim.

The police are looking for the accused.

Meanwhile, criticising the incident, Congress Legislature Party leader Sunil Jakhar termed it as the degradation of moral values as well as the police system in the state.

Expressing concern at the non-availability of a gynaecologist at Fazilka, which led to a failure in facilitating initial medical care to the victim, Jakhar lashed out at the SAD-BJP government, saying it was high time the health minister woke up from his slumber and ensured medical facilities to people.

Forest and labour minister Surjit Kumar Jiyani also expressed shock at the incident.

Jiyani said that recently, the gynaecologist posted at Fazilka civil hospital had got promoted, and now he would take up the matter with the health minister to appoint another gynaecologist soon.

Deputy commissioner Basant Garg said he would ensure free medical care to the victim besides arranging any other assistance sought by the family. He said he would write to the government to appoint a gynaecologist at the hospital soon.
